Spotlight on CIPHER Education & Training

Please see our new range of Physiotherapy Services here to find out how we can support you.

FREC 4 1As a Qualsafe approved education provider, regulated by Ofqual, CIPHER Medical offers a large range of nationally recognised education and training programmes.

Our second course to feature in our Spotlight series tells you everything you need to know about FREC 4: QA Level 4 First Response Emergency Care (RQF) and where it can lead you.

As we highlighted FREC 3 last month, it makes sense to shine our spotlight on your next steps as you progress in high quality training in First Response Emergency Care. A FREC 4 course is your natural next step and it will serve to further develop your knowledge and skills. The FREC 4 qualification provides participants with a wider scope of practice in prehospital care emergencies, including developing an in-depth knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the heart and respiratory system, ECG monitoring and rhythm recognition, and use of supraglottic airway devices.

Acquiring this knowledge and securing the necessary pre-hospital skills allows for greater employment opportunities in specialist roles such as event first aiders, fire fighters, police firearms and medics, and close protection operatives. The qualification is recognised by the Security Industries Authority (SIA) and Expedition Leaders UK and overseas. Employers may also accept this transferrable qualification as evidence of learning and skill development within roles such as Emergency Care Assistant within the private and NHS ambulance sector.

FREC 4 2The training takes place over five days and is delivered by fully qualified paramedics and out-of-hospital specialist educators who have an engaging and creative approach. Using our state-of-the-art equipment and learning environments, we are able to put our learners ‘right into the action’ with our specially designed training facility stocked with industry-leading simulation and training equipment. We also fully utilise our immersive classroom, featuring simulation suite, all to give you the high-quality training and experiences required for completion of this course.

There are three components to complete over the course of your training, building on learning from FREC 3, but covering a more extensive and advanced range of topics:

  • Component 1: Patient Assessment and Management: assess and manage injury and illness; understand the structure and function of the heart and cardiac conduction system; understand the pathological changes associated with heart disease; use ECG monitoring on a patient; manage a patient’s airway; manage a patient using medical gases; administer medical gases in line with current practice.
  • Component 2: Emergency Trauma Care: understand the function of components of the respiratory system; assess and treat thoracic trauma; understand the function of the musculoskeletal system; understand the key characteristics of the nervous system; understand mechanisms of injury and kinetics; provide emergency care to traumatically injured patients; manage cases of actual/suspected sexual assault; provide first response emergency care at a major incident.
  • Component 3: Focused Emergency and Urgent Care: understand physical and psychosocial development in children; provide emergency care to sick and injured children; understand how to deal with a patient displaying signs of mental health problems; understand how to deal with common respiratory conditions; understand the structure and function of the digestive system; assess and initially manage sepsis; manage childbirth; assist a clinician performing clinical interventions.

FREC 4 3At CIPHER Medical, we value and pride ourselves on the expertise and professionalism of our team: all our instructors are current clinical practitioners so this means that you will benefit from the most up-to-date medical knowledge and training. Our Head of Education and Research, Chris Moat, always keen to highlight the benefits of this training, says, “FREC 4 is a fantastic next step in prehospital emergency care qualifications. It goes without saying that it can lead to a range of rewarding employment and career advancement. I’m especially proud that we boast a high level of instructor expertise, knowledge, and experience, placing CIPHER Medical in an excellent position for training and education in the sector.”

FREC 4 4Part of a progressive pathway of courses, FREC 4 is the Level 4 stage of the First Responder Emergency Care pathway and you can, if you wish to qualify further, go all the way through the qualification stages, up to Level 6 (Diploma in Paramedic Practice), successful completion of which will allow you to apply for registration as a paramedic.

Endorsed by The Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care – The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and fulfilling the competencies set out in the PHEM skills framework at descriptor level D, FREC 4 is perfect for you if you want to progress in your work in the prehospital medical sector.
